Acid Reflux is a condition in which the acid from the stomach passes back into the esophagus through the lower esophageal sphincter. Under normal conditions, this valve at the entrance of the stomach closes soon after the entry of the food.
When this valve is not closed tightly or opens too often, the digestive juices present in the stomach moves back into the esophagus through this valve.
This results in a burning sensation in the esophagus, commonly known as the ‘heartburn’.
When the symptoms of acid reflux occur frequently, the condition is known as acid reflux disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
