1 What is Sinusitis?

Inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses is known as sinusitis.

Normally sinuses are filled with air. But sometimes these sinuses are blocked and filled with fluid which allows the growth of infectious agents like viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Is a Sinus Infection Contagious

Sinusitis is of different types:

  • acute sinusitis – This lasts for a month or less. It starts with a sudden onset of symptoms like runny, stuffy nose and facial pain
  • subacute sinusitis – Inflammation lasts for 4 to 8 weeks
  • chronic sinusitis – In this case the symptoms lasts for more than 8 weeks, and
  • recurrent sinusitis – People with this condition will have several attacks of sinusitis in a year
