Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. George Gabriel Abdelsayed, who serves patients in Staten Island, New York City, New York.

With over three decades of experience as a board certified gastroenterologist, Dr. Abdelsayed has worked for over a decade as a hepatologist with specific clinical focus on treating liver disease, including hepatitis B and C, alcohol-induced liver disease, and nutritional liver disease. He is also a highly skilled gastrointestinal endoscopist and is proficient in endoscopic and advanced endoscopic procedures, including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.

Currently, he serves as the Director of Ambulatory Hepatology and Chief Quality Officer at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York City, New York. He is also a Physician Advisor and Medical Director of Utilization Review and Utilization Management (April 2019 – present), and is affiliated with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Alongside his clinical role, he serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine within the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

We can make a big difference with early detection and treatment of hepatitis C before it develops into a more serious illness, like hepatocellular carcinoma, a form of liver cancer, or lead to liver failure, which may necessitate liver transplantation” expressed the doctor.

Among his academic appointments, Dr. Abdelsayed has served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Seton Hall University of Graduate Medical Education (1997-2000), an Assistant Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Medicine (2006-2007), an Associate Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Medicine (2007-2013), an Associate Professor of Medicine at the  Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell (2015-2016), and as an Associate Clinical Professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine (8/2016-10/2017).

His ability to teach at such a high level stems from a very long and successful career in the field of medicine, during which time he upheld a successful private practice for eight years in Paterson, New Jersey. He also served in various capacities at hospitals, including Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn (September 2016-October 2017), Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (September 2016 – October 2017), Northwell Health System Director within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Staten Island University Hospital (September 2013-May 2016), Section Chief and Program Director of the Department of Gastroenterology at Bridgeport Hospital/Yale New Haven System (October 2005-August 2012), Chairman of the Department of Medicine at The Barnet Hospital (January 2002-October 2005), Associate Chairman for Education & Associate Program Director for Internal Medicine Residency at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center (December 1995 – December 1998), Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at Methodist Hospital (January 1993 – December 1995), and as an Attending in Gastroenterology and Nutrition Liaison Consultant at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island (July 1989-1992). 

Over the years, some of the doctor’s clinical responsibilities have included: supervising and teaching medical students, residents, and fellows for patients on the inpatient service; giving formal, and core lectures for medical students, residents, and fellows; making daily inpatient rounds; performing physician advisor and utilization director duties, which includes performing clinical reviews on cases referred by case coordination or hospital administration, regarding the quality of patient care and efficient utilization of resources; evaluating the appropriateness of hospitalization and or continued stay; serving as a liaison between the CDI (Coding and Documentation Improvement) department team and the medical staff; serving as an active participant in and support of all educational and patient care activities of the internal medicine residency service & gastroenterology as directed by the department chair and division chief; as well as performing outpatient gastroenterology/hepatology services and procedures and participating in the on call schedule as directed by the division chief.

A native of Egypt, Dr. Abdelsayed first came to the United States when he was 13. He graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Saint John’s University in 1978. He then went on to earn his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla in 1983.

Furthering his training, he performed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Winthrop University Hospital in 1986, and his fellowship in gastroenterology at Montefiore Medical Center Wakefield Campus in 1989.

Dedicated to clinical excellence, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Furthermore, he is A Diplomate of the American Clinical Board of Nutrition, which is a professional certification organization acting in the public interest by establishing education, examination, experience, and ethics requirements for certification in nutrition.

Maintaining fellowship status, Dr. Abdelsayed is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF), a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (FAASLD), a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, a Fellow of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Additionally, he is a member of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Association of Physician Leadership, and the American Liver Foundation Greater New York Division, Medical Advisory Committee.

Holding positions on the Board of Directors / Board of Trustees, Dr. Abdelsayed served as a member of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (1996-1998), a member of the American College of Physicians, New Jersey Chapter Governor’s Council (1997-2005), the president of the New Jersey Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (1997-1998), the president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (1999-2000), a physician-at-large of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (2000-2005), the chairman of the Barnert Hospital Pharmacy, Therapeutics & Nutrition Committee (2000-2003), on the Action Corporation, New Jersey (2001-2004), a delegate of the American College of Physicians Leadership Day on Capitol Hill ( 2001, 2002 and 2003), the president of the New Jersey Society of Gastroenterology (2003-2004), a reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology (2006-2012), a member of the American Liver Foundation Medical Advisory Committee, CT Chapter (2006-2012), and as a member of the Board of Directors and Physician Advisor on Quality Assurance, North Hudson Community.

Throughout his extensive line of work, Dr. Abdelsayed has conducted numerous publications, including original articles; books, monographs and chapters; reviews; case reports; editorials; and other professional communications.
