  • Cataract Surgery - Lens Choices

Once you’ve decided to proceed with cataract surgery, there is the big decision of which intraocular lens (IOL) lens to use.  IOL is an artificial lens that is implanted in the eye during cataract surgery to replace the eye’s natural clouded crystalline lens.  There are a few basic types of...

  • Cataracts

A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens. Our clear aspirin sized lens is made mostly of water and protein.  As we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of our lens.  This formation is the start of a cataract.  Over time it would cloud more of the lens...

  • Why are my mother's eyes watering 1 year after cataract surgery?

Most likely it is due to dry eyes. It is not a result of the cataract surgery. She can try artificial tears (Refresh or Systane) that can be purchased at CVS or Walgreens. Best to purchase the kind that is in single vials as it is preservative free. Each box comes in 25 or 30 vials. See if that helps. Depending on the severity of the dry eyes that may enough or she may need to see an ophthalmologist and he/she can put in punctal plugs. Punctal plug is a very small device that is inserted into the tear duct of the an eye to prevent the drainage of fluid from the eye. This treats people with severe dry eyes. This procedure is just a few minutes with little discomfort. READ MORE

  • After cataract surgery

This could be a result of a common complication after cataract surgery called Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO). This is when there is a thickening of the back of the lens capsule which can cause your vision to become cloudy. This complication can develop early on during the cataract surgery recovery or sometimes even several months later. An in-office procedure using the YAG laser is used to treat PCO. A laser beam is directed at the cloudy capsule and is used to remove the hazy posterior capsule from your line of sight. This procedure is painless and takes only a few minutes. You may resume normal activities right after the procedure. READ MORE

  • Can sunglasses spoil kids eyesight?

No, that will not spoil his vision. The earlier the sun protection, the better. Especially nowadays when the ozone layer is thinning, the sun is more damaging to our eyes than ever before. When shopping for children or adult glasses alike, choosing one with 100% UV protection is best. READ MORE

  • What is the difference between optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who have completed college, 4 years of medical school, 1 year of internship, 3 years of residency and possibly another 1-2 years of fellowship. An Ophthalmologist diagnose and treats all eye diseases, fits and prescribes contact lens and glasses to correct vision problems and performs complex and delicate eye surgeries. Optometrists have completed college and 4 years of Optometry school. They perform vision correction exams and fits and prescribes eyeglasses and contact lens. Optometrists can also perform certain eye exams and detect certain diseases in the eye. The main difference between an ophthalmologist and optometrist is that an ophthalmologist attended medical school and is trained to perform eye surgeries. Optometrists do not perform surgeries. • Is there a way to treat cataract without surgery?

As to date, there is no medication that can slow down the growth of or clear the clouded lens. In the early stages of the cataracts, most people can get by with improving their vision with new glasses, contacts, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying glass, however as the cataracts get worse over time, surgery is the only effective treatment. If left untreated, the cataract will become so clouded that it would be very difficult to see any details. In a cataract surgery, the physician would remove the clouded damaged lens and replace it with a clear plastic intraocular lens (IOL). In the past, before the development of the IOL implants, physicians would wait until the cataract is advanced and dense, however today with advanced surgical techniques and equipments, physicians tend to suggest cataract surgery at an earlier stage in development. • Could my dry eyes be due to excessive exposure to the computer screen?

Most likely your eyes are very dry. Symptoms of Dry Eyes: - Stinging, burning, scratchiness sensation in your eyes - Overflow of tearing - Feeling of that something is in the eye - Blurred vision, usually worsening at the end of the day - Stringy mucus in or around your eyes - Eye fatigue after short periods of reading - Difficulty in wearing contact lenses Especially when you are staring at your computer screen for long hours, you are probably very concentrated in what you are doing and thus amplifying the problem by forgetting to blink. Remind yourself to blink while you are on your computer or while using your cell phone to text or surf the internet. You can also go to the nearby drugstore to purchase preservative-free artificial tears. There are several brands on the market that are available without prescription. Many people try different brands to find one that they like the best. Preservative-free does not have preservatives, so try to use up each vial within one day. If you do not open the vial, it can keep for a long time. In some instances where the dry eyes are more severe, your ophthalmologist may perform a procedure where the channels to your tear duct are closed temporarily or permanently to create a reservoir of tears. This procedure takes less than 1 minute and is minimal discomfort. They may also prescribe Restasis which is only available through prescription. READ MORE

  • My eyes are red and itching badly. Why is this happening?

Yes, most likely you are experiencing allergies. There are a few prescription eye drops that work well for these allergies. Pataday works very well, although maybe expensive depending on the insurance you have. Azelastine also works well without the heavy price. Unfortunately for both eye drops, it is not over-the-counter and must be prescribed by your ophthalmologist. You can also try Allegra (which is over-the-counter) to see if it helps. READ MORE
