  • Can physical therapy help a torn rotator cuff?

  • Can you push a herniated disc back into place?

No, once a disc is herniated it will remain that way. The treatment options would include active physical therapy with a focus on core strengthening as well as extension type exercises, injections and if these treatments fail ultimately surgery would be an option. There are some people that will also advocate for what they call spinal decompression, basically lumbar traction, again this is a good option in combination with strengthening, but it is not a standalone treatment. For a lot of my patients with disc injuries I start them off in aquatic therapy. These are the ways that water's natural properties create an ideal therapeutic environment: Warm water provides a relaxing and soothing environment for aching joints and muscles. Water's natural viscosity or resistance can be used for muscle strengthening and increasing rehabilitation progressions. Buoyancy allows for flotation and reduces the effects of gravity on injured or aching joints and muscles. Hydrostatic pressure supports and stabilizes the client, allowing people with balance deficits to perform exercises without a fear of falling, decreasing pain and improving cardiovascular return. Turbulence and wave propagation let the therapist gently manipulate the client through the desired exercises. The respiratory muscles are forced to work harder in the water, allowing for a natural strengthening that benefits the client long after the therapy session has ended. Following aquatic therapy I progress them to land based active core strengthening. READ MORE

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A chiropractor uses spinal adjustments, manipulation, and other techniques to manage patients’ health concerns, including neck pain, back pain, headaches, vertigo and a long list of other ailments and conditions. They aim to improve patients’ functionality and quality of life by properly aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure and enabling the body to heal itself naturally, without the use of medication or surgery.

In 2023, Dr. Garrett was recognized as a Top Doctor by Best in Texas Magazine and named as a Pinnacle Professional Member of the Continental Who’s Who Registry.

Over the years, he has completed five marathons, one Iron-Man triathlon, six Iron-Man half-triathlons, seven duathlons, multiple Olympic-distance triathlons, and at least 20 half-marathons. He even qualified and competed on Team USA in the Duathlon World Championship – Long Course in 2016.

When Dr. Garrett is not treating patients, he can be found on the golf course, cheering on the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Wild, and Loons, and enjoying his favorite pastime – spending time with his grandson, Zach.
