Throughout his medical training, Dr. Elshafei graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University in Egypt in 1988. Upon relocating to the United States, he went on to perform his residency in psychiatry at New York Medical College.

With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, he is board-certified in psychiatry and neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

A member of the American Society of Bariatric Medicine, Dr. Elshafei is also board-certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). The ABAM provides assurance to the American public that addiction medicine physicians have the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and treat addiction.
