Get to know Interventional Neurologist Dr. Anthony Alvarado-Ortiz, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

An interventional neurologist, Dr. Alvarado-Ortiz practices at South Texas Stroke & Neuroendovascular Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

In affiliation with Baptist Health System, he serves as Chair of the Department of Neuroscience (January 2022 – present), and as Regional Stroke Director (June 2021 – present). 

Specializing in endovascular surgery, stroke and critical care, some of the conditions that he treats include cerebrovascular disease. Likewise, some of the procedures that he performs include intracranial artery repair, fluoroscopy, and intraluminal device insertion.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Alvarado-Ortiz graduated with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2014. He then went on to perform his residency in neurology at Larkin Community Hospital in 2018 and his fellowship in vascular neurology at Tulane Medical Center in 2021.

Attributing his success to great mentors, Dr. Alvarado-Ortiz is board-certified in neurology and vascular neurology by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (AOBNP). The AOBNP is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) and physicians who specialize in disorders of the nervous system (neurologists) and to qualified DOs and physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders (psychiatrists).

In Texas, Dr. Alvarado-Ortiz is affiliated with Baptist Medical Center, North Central Baptist Hospital, Mission Trail Baptist Hospital, and Resolute Baptist Hospital.

On a professional level, he is an active member of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology, the Neurocritical Care Society, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Stroke Association. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

Neurology is the branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the brain, the spinal cord and the peripheral nerves. Neurological practice relies heavily on the field of neuroscience, the scientific study of the nervous system. An interventional neurologist is a neurologist with specialized training in the use of minimally invasive, image-guided techniques to treat complex conditions of the brain, neck, and spine.
