  • What exactly does a respiratory therapist do?

If you have not already, I would recommend that your grandfather see a physician to be properly diagnosed. Wheezing is caused by narrowing of the airways. This can be due to many factors (inflammation, obstruction, etc.) A respiratory therapist (RT) can administered medication that allows the airways to relax; however, it is important to know what's causing the wheezing to know if the medication will be effective. A RT specializes in pulmonary medicine. RTs have either a 2 or 4 year degree. They are trained practitioners that provide treatment to those suffering from pulmonary disease and other diagnosis that affect the respiratory system. READ MORE

  • Does a respiratory therapist use medicines to treat a patient or is it only through respiratory exercises?

To treat a patient medically, a respiratory therapist (RT) will treat their patient according to the patient's respiratory diagnosis and symptoms. Within many healthcare facilities protocols are written allowing the RT autonomy to treat the patient with certain respiratory medications and treat modalities. Outside of the protocols, the RT must follow the physician's orders. Again, there are a limited number of respiratory medications that the RT can prescribe. That will be defined in the written protocols within each medical facility. Physical exercise can be used to help build endurance for some patients who have been diagnosed with a respiratory disease; however, it varies in each patient and the treat regimen will be overseen by the medical doctor. • My daughter breathes through her mouth due to her adenoids problem. Is this okay?

Hello! Swollen adenoids can make it tough to breathe through the nose. Because of that, the most natural response is to breathe through the mouth to get air in. When you are a "nose breather" it can be very uncomfortable to breathe through your mouth because the body is not use to that way. Consult your daughter's medical provider for proper care. I hope she feels better soon. READ MORE

  • Can a respiratory therapist help treat a bronchitis infection?

Hello! Typically the right antibiotic should help clear the infection. Each patient's ability and time it takes to heal is different due to other factors. Within my experience as a Respiratory Therapist, I have administrated respiratory medications and other modalities to treat specific respiratory symptoms while the patient had bronchitis. The best way to know the correct respiratory treatment regimen is for your husband to be assessed by his healthcare provider. Hope he feels better soon. READ MORE
