Do premature babies have developmental delays?
Not necessarily. A lot of things will determine whether a premature baby will have developmental delays or not. For example how many weeks at the baby was born, whether Mom received good prenatal care or not, place of delivery (level 2 NICU vs level 3 or 4 NICU), any associated complications etc... Bottom-line is the more premature the baby is the more likely to have developmental delays. READ MORE
Can we see if my baby has a congenital disease in the womb?
Yes but only the structural problems can be detected by regular OBG care. That means, regular OBG check ups, ultrasound scan in 2nd trimester (also called as anomaly scan) can detect most of the structural problems in the fetus. The vast majority of metabolic diseases cannot be detected by clinical exam and scans. Will need special tests such as cfDNA, amnicentesis and chorionic villous sampling which can diagnose some of these chromosomal and metabolic diseases of the fetus. But most of these tests are invasive tests, will be done only if absolutely indicated and as per the advice of perinatal medicine specialists. READ MORE
Are all congenital disorders inherited?
Many congenital disorders run in the families. But there are certain type of diseases where you may not find any parent with disease. There can be many reasons for this. For example, if the parents are only cariers of the disease, they may not have any signs and symptoms of the disease but they carry the chromosomal abnormalities which can be transmitted to the kids resulting in disease in the kids. Your OBG doctor will be able to explain better. READ MORE

Areas of research
I have been working on preeclampsia, its effects on the fetal growth and neonatal outcomes. I have published on the biomarkers in relation to development of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, how gestational diabetes and pre-gestational diabetes increase the risk for preeclampsia. My core research interest is preeclampsia and its effects on the newborn such as intrauterine growth restriction and small for gestational age babies. The ultimate goal my research is to delineate biomolecules responsible for causing preeclampsia and find an agent/drug to block these biomolecules thereby prevent preeclampsia and its deleterious effects on the offspring. I have published on this topic in various journals and have some more projects in pipeline. My other interests are neurodevelopmental outcomes in premature infants, NICU Follow up clinic, BPD prevention strategies in the NICU and infection control in the NICU.
