Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Ama Fordwor-Koranteng, who serves patients in Chicago, Illinois.

Well-versed in the field of neonatal-perinatal medicine, Dr. Fordwor-Koranteng specializes in high-risk deliveries, premature infants, and congenital anomalies.

Born in Ghana, West Africa, Dr. Fordwor-Koranteng moved to the United States over 20 years ago. She earned her medical degree from the University of Science and Technology School of Medicine in 1992. She then went on to complete her residency in pediatrics at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in 1998, and her fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in 2004.

Licensed to practice medicine in Illinois and Wisconsin, she is board-certified in neonatal-perinatal medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Alongside her clinical practice, Dr. Fordwor-Koranteng can be found on staff at SSM Health Saint Mary’s Hospital.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill, or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Fordwor-Koranteng loves to cook, dance, and watch great movies in her free time.
