What happens when a child with autism loses routine?
When kids on the spectrum have no routine, they easily get bored. This is when certain behaviors start to get worse. Neurotypical kids might use this extra free time to party with friends or go to the water park. Children with autism, however, can instead withdraw from society even more. Loss of structure has even been known to trigger aggression in children with ASD.
What does this mean for summer vacation?
Though it’s well known that structure and routine help kids with autism, no one has studied how summer affects families with each end of the school year. However, we do know that there are some ways families can make this time easier for them. There are things you can do to keep your autistic child happy during the summer holidays, or any other holiday.
