If astigmatism (non-spherical cornea) is present, a lens that neutralizes it can be used to relieve the need for glasses post-op. If the patient wants to be independent of glasses for distance and near either multifocal (progressive) lenses or monovision (dominant eye for distance, non-dominant eye for near). I favor monovision with standard full vision spherical or astigmatic lenses as the optimal way to eliminate glasses in those most motivated to avoid wearing glasses. The motivation and strong dominance best predict those who will accept monovision.
