Hello,
Glycomet is a combination of two medications; glyburide and metformin. This medication won't help you to loose weight. Glyburide is a very old medication and as a side effect causes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which in turn increases appetite. I would say I see more weight gain than weight neutral with glyburide. Metformin may help loose some weight (no more than 5 lbs) if taken without the glyburide. We have better options for diabetes and weight loss. Discuss with your physician using GLP1 analogs such as Victoza, Ozempic, Tresiba.

Hello,
An A1C of 11 is very elevated. As you mention, this is poorly control diabetes. If your mother is not on insulin at the moment she might need to be now. If already in insulin then insulin needs to be adjusted. With out knowing her kidney function I would suggest a SGLT 2 inhibitor which helps by urinating the excess sugar and a GLP1 agonist. Will help the pancreas produce more insulin and control carb intake. Your mom should seek the help of an endocrinologist to control her glucose. Also, as I like to tell patients remember that glucose control 80% is diet and 20% is medication (unless insulin dependent).

It depends in the treatment you are currently for your diabetes. If in insulin and pills then you need to check at least 3 times a day. But if only on oral medication usually 1-2 times is ok. At the beginning of the diagnosis is good to check offen specially when you wake up and before and after a meal. This is the time you will learn how your sugar responds to certain foods. Also when adding or changing medication it’s good to check often to see if the medication/dose is working. But a controlled type 2 diabetic on oral medication one time is ok, again this is when you are in a steady treatment that does not jnvolve insulin.
