What is Urology?
Urology is a branch of medicine that focuses on diseases of the urinary tract and the male and female reproductive tract. Urologists can specialize in urologic oncology, urologic reconstruction, and female urology. They typically use robotic surgery to treat a variety of urologic conditions.
Urologic Oncology. Urologic oncology is the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. These organs include the bladder, kidneys, prostate, penis, and testicles. When surgery is needed, urologists may use laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
Urologic Reconstruction. Urologic reconstructive surgery is the surgical re-routing, recreating, or repairing of the urinary tract. Reconstruction is often needed in patients who have suffered urinary tract injuries, usually from trauma. Other conditions such as cancer treatments, congenital malformations, and infections can result in the necessity for urologic reconstructive surgery.
Female Urology. Female urology is the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract disorders, most prevalent in females (urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infection, and pelvic pain). This includes a complete history and physical exam, as well as additional bladder studies such as urodynamics, imaging studies, and cystoscopy.
