A Virginia “Top Doc” for care to those most in need!
Much of modern medicine is devoted to the business of providing the best care, frequently provided by specialists, and the latest cutting-edge technology. There is, however, another timeless responsibility of the profession- to provide care to those most in need. Doctor Arthur Fournier's career has been devoted to meeting that need.
Dr. Fournier graduated from Merrimack College in 1969 and Tufts University School of Medicine in 1973. His residency training at the hospitals affiliated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine was followed by two years voluntary service in the National Health Service Corps on Virginia’s Eastern Shore Accomack County from 1976-78, which at the time, had virtually no doctors!
Dr. Fournier’s academic career at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami began in 1978. He rose to the ranks of Professor of Family Medicine and Internal Medicine, Vice-Chairman of Family Medicine and Associate Dean for Community Health. His career has been dedicated to caring for the poor, both in Virginia, South Florida and in Haiti.
Dr. Fournier taught at every year level at the Miller School of Medicine and taught residents from training programs in both Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. He has pioneered innovative primary care education models that bring preventive and primary health care to the underserved. These innovations include health fairs and model teaching clinics serving minorities, inner city school children, the homeless, migrant farmworkers and immigrants. In 1994, he, along with Dr. Barth Green, founded Project Medishare, a charity dedicated to improving heath in Haiti. Since then, he has made over two hundred trips to Haiti, supervising medical student volunteers and providing direct patient care. In 1997 an award from the Green Family Foundation allowed him the opportunity to establish a community health program in Haiti’s Central Plateau. In 1998, he received a grant from the Open Society Institute to establish a family medicine residency-training program for Haitian physicians. This program was the first- ever family medicine training program in a developing country.
Dr. Fournier is the recipient of several awards for his humanitarian work and published numerous articles in medical journals on a variety of subjects ranging from medical education to AIDS. He was one of the first doctors to treat AIDS patients in Miami and to recognize the socio-economic forces driving the epidemic. He is frequently interviewed by or called to write for local and national media.
He has also published three books on Haiti - “The Zombie Curse”, “Vodou Saints” and “Hope Makes Us Live!”. In addition, he recently published a book, “Intern! Life on the wards of a teaching hospital. 1973-74" That provides a 50-year perspective on the evolution of medical education and practice. Doctor Fournier donates the proceeds of his books to humanitarian work in Haiti. You can learn more about Dr Fournier's work and support it by visiting drarthurfournier.com and projectmedishare.org.
Dr. Fournier retired back to Virginia's Eastern Shore 15 years ago. There, in addition to his ongoing work in Haiti, he serves on the board of Eastern Shore Rural Health, donating his expertise as to how to best deliver care to underserved communities, as well as advocating at a local, state and federal level for expanded services to the underserved communities in Virginia and around the nation.
