Humidifiers help in this situation because it keeps the mucous from getting thick and clogging the airways. Viral illnesses are the most common cause of congestion. If they are truly having difficulty breathing (rapid breathing, color change around lips, fatigue) they need immediate evaluation to figure out what the issue is.

Children over 1 can take a tablespoon of honey. Remember that cough is a response to an illness, not the illness itself.
