Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure done to the nose to change its shape or improve its function. This surgery is commonly referred to as a "nose job." The upper portion of the nose is bone and the lower portion is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can change bone, cartilage, skin, or all three if necessary. The surgery can treat nose size in relation to facial balance, nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils, nose profile with bumps or depressions on the bridge, a nasal tip that is enlarged, drooping, upturned, or hooked, nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned, and nasal symmetry. Rhinoplasty is done to improve one's appearance, but can also be performed to repair deformities from an injury, correct a birth defect, or improve breathing difficulties.

Now that we know what rhinoplasty is and why it is done, let's look at several factors that help determine whether you are a good candidate for this type of surgery. The first factor is age. Plastic surgeons recommend patients are at least in their late teens or into adulthood. This is when all skeletal and soft-tissue facial growth should be complete.

A second factor is a dissatisfaction with one's appearance. Patients who are unhappy with the way their nose looks can have poor self-esteem and low confidence. Rhinoplasty can help decrease these negative feelings.

Functionality is a third factor. Patients looking to correct functional issues are good candidates. This would include things like nasal obstructions or a deviated septum that may be affecting an individual's ability to breathe normally.

Rhinoplasty is not for everyone. It is a big decision and the procedure is individualized for each patient. If you have any of the following characteristics, you might make a good candidate for rhinoplasty.

  • Your nose makes you self-conscious or unhappy
  • You have a nose deformity that needs correcting
  • You have reasonable expectations of the surgery and its results
  • You are the right age
  • You understand what is involved and can prepare for it
  • You are aware of medical conditions and allergies you may have and have discussed them with the surgeon
  • You are doing the procedure for yourself and nobody else

Rhinoplasty and Emotional Health

Let's face it...one of the first things people notice when they meet you or look at your picture is your nose. If you are unhappy with your nose, this can play a drastic role in how you view yourself and how you perceive others to view you. This can definitely have an impact on one's confidence and self-esteem.

Rhinoplasty can change the size of the nose, as well as its width and profile. The nose tip, shape of the nostrils, and balance of the nose (or nasal symmetry) can also be altered. When performed by a skilled, qualified plastic surgeon like Dr. Webb, rhinoplasty can provide a life-changing and rewarding experience for patients who choose to have the procedure done.

When we feel good about our appearance, we have more confidence in ourselves. The more confidence we have, the better self-esteem we have. When all of these important factors are in place, our quality of life greatly improves.
