Most knee pain if it is not from some direct injury or a disease process is due to some structural imbalance. With my patients, I begin with a complete examination of the legs from the arches of the feet to the the pelvis and spine. Chronic knee pain can be caused by a muscular imbalance, fallen arches or nerve interference from the low back. These cases usually resolve with adjustments, muscle work, kinesio-taping, acupuncture, or custom orthotics or some combination of these. Try to find a chiropractor who is good at or is a specialist in sports chiropractic. That is your best bet for resolving your issue.

The most common form of a crooked spine is called scoliosis. This is diagnosed by X-ray. There are methods to treat this with chiropractic adjustments, but not all chiropractors specialize in this sort of correction. The earlier treatment begins the more likelihood there will be of optimal correction. It usually begins in the teenage years and is best treated before one is fully grown.

Chiropractic adjustments typically are not painful. Almost all the time a patient will feel a great deal of relief immediately afterwards. The more one can relax, the easier that adjustment will feel. A good doctor will set up for the adjustment and feel for the patient to relax when making the correction.Give your doctor feed back about what you are feeling. There are several ways to adjust a patient and sometimes it takes some exploring to find out what will work best for you. Not all chiropractors use the same methods to adjust. Sometimes you may need to find a doctor who uses a different method. All that to say, chiropractic is the best and safest health care you can get. Many patients get excellent improvement with the first adjustment. Others take a few visits before they get noticeable results. The body responds to time and repetition, so for lasting results one should go through a course of active treatment which may consist of several visits a week for a few weeks. Then to maintain the correction and to prevent other problems, one should have regular monthly adjustments.

What do chiropractors do when they crack your back?

The cracking sound you heard is called an audible release. It is the same thing that happens when one pops his knuckles. Every joint in the body where two bones come together has a joint capsule that surrounds the ends and connects the bones together. That capsule is filled with joint fluid. When the bones are pulled quickly as happens in an adjustment the pressure inside the joint drops. The same drop in pressure happens when one unscrews the lid of a Coke. The release of pressure causes the coke to release gases that are in the fluid. The gases become bubbles and create the cracking or popping sound. The same process occurs in the joints and it creates that sound. It is a good thing and is part of a good adjustment.

"Spinal manipulation was associated with improvement in headache outcomes in two trials involving patients with neck pain and/or neck dysfunction and headache. Manipulation appeared to result in immediate improvement in headache severity when used to treat episodes of cervicogenic headache when compared with an attention-placebo control. Furthermore, when compared to soft-tissue therapies (massage), a course of manipulation treatments resulted in sustained improvement in headache frequency and severity."

It is not unusual to have pain in the form of muscle soreness after your first adjustment. Typically, it resolves that afternoon or the next day. If it doesn't, be sure to call your doctor to let him know. This usually only happens after the first or second treatment. It is due to the muscles relaxing. They have been overworking in response to the spinal problems. Once they relax, it is like you have been over-training at the gym. You get sore.
Hope that helps.

There can be several reasons for shoulder pain, impingement, bone spurs, muscle imbalance and subluxation of the shoulder. It would take a complete exam to figure out what is the cause of it. I am sorry that the cortisone injection did not give you any relief. Some people get a wonderful "cure" of the pain, most get at least two weeks relief before symptoms return and like you, sometimes it fails to give any relief. While cortisone can help with the pain it usually does not get to the cause of the pain and has the unfortunate additional effect of damaging the tendons and ligaments and weakening the bones. I would advise you to find a good chiropractor who treats sports injuries. He can probably help you.

Current research shows that chiropractic is the best treatment for resolving chronic neck or back pain. You need to find a good chiropractor and start treatment quickly. Get references from your friends who have a chiropractor. There are many competent doctors but chiropractic is very artful and it is sometimes hard to find a really excellent doctor. The best reference will be from someone who says, "I've seen a lot of chiropractors and this guy is the best."

It is not unusual to have some soreness when beginning an adjustment routine. But, that should go away after the first few adjustments. If you are getting regular adjustments (once a week or two) and this is true every time you are adjusted, be sure to talk to your chiropractor and let him know. He may need to modify the adjustment, use a different technique or re-examine you to find out why this is continuing to happen. If you are improving over time, this may eventually stop, but you chiropractor should still want to know.
As far as exercise goes, I tell my patients that exercise sets the adjustment. It may be that after an adjustment gentle exercise like walking or range of motion exercises within pain tolerance would be beneficial and help reduce the soreness. Drinking extra water can help flush toxins that are released from muscles that become more relaxed and that may feel sore after and adjustment. Soaking in an Epsom Salt bath is also helpful.
Run these suggestions by your chiropractor to get his input on them. He knows your back and situation better than I do. Also, listen to your body and do the things that make it feel better. That is usually a good guide.

I cannot speak specifically about the laws of Illinois as I am only licensed in North Carolina. I can say that our state requires at least one examination per year for patients with ongoing treatment. Considering your conditions "spinal curvature and collapsed vertebra" it would be in you own interest to know if there has been further change or deterioration of your spinal condition. Five years is a reasonable amount of time to want a re-examination to determine what if anything has changed for the better or worse and what has been maintained.

Constipation can be caused by an irritation to the nerves that regulate the bowels. The irritation interferes with the signals that move the bowels and allow them to empty. Chiropractors treat the spine to remove the interference to the nerves. Once the normal nerve activity is restored then normal function can occur. In my experience children typically respond very rapidly and positively to gentle adjustments. Your pediatrician is very wise to recommend chiropractic care, the largest oldest drug free health care system in the United States.

There are several causes for sciatica. True sciatica is a pain that runs down the back of the leg following the sciatic nerve (some people call it their psychotic nerve). This is generally caused by a bulging disk. Many disk problems are successfully resolved by chiropractic treatment. In several studies chiropractic is the treatment of choice. Pain on the outside of the thigh is probably coming from another cause. You need a good chiropractor who can differentiate the cause and apply the proper treatment. Treatment usually consist of a series of chiropractic adjustments. The worse the problem, the longer the course of treatment, generally. Often other therapies will be needed including physical therapy, exercise, diet, nutrition, and acupuncture. If it is a disk problem and the doctor can decrease the bulging then the problem will not return unless the patient does something else to cause it to bulge again like lifting wrong or too much weight. If the patient has waited too long and there is much degeneration then a regimen of wellness care getting adjustments once or twice a month will usually keep the symptoms minimized or absent.

Often tennis elbow is caused by a slight misalignment of the bones of the elbow joint. The repeated straining of the joint from even ordinary activity will cause inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Treating the inflammation with pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs will only make the problem get worse. You have to treat the cause of the inflammation. Braces may give temporary relief but I have never seen them cure the problem. Only adjusting the joint and restoring normal function will cause it to go away.
