The causes of headaches are many and the symptoms vary from one individual to another. The headaches I am going to be addressing today are Cervicogenic in origin. These headaches start at the base of the head in the back. There are two areas that I work on when addressing this, which are the neck muscles and the upper cervical spine.
When I treat my patients I treat both the muscle and the joint since I feel that both play a part in the condition. This depends entirely on the condition of the patient, like how severe is the headache at the moment. Sometimes we use ice and sometimes we use heat, depending on the severity. Then, we use electric stimulation, or as some people call it TENS, which stands for Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation. Myofascial work is next. All this is to relax the muscle enough to reduce the spasm and let us move the joint around. Lastly, we perform a cervical adjustment. Depending on how long they have had the headache, we can sometimes take care of the pain in one to three visits. If this is a chronic condition, we can then address the conditions or activities that cause it to return.
There is so much more to talk about. I will talk more about this in my next post.
