Dr. Gatto is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University in Albany, New York, where he also completed his internship, residency in orthopedic surgery, and fellowship in spine surgery. During his time in Albany, he was honored with The Barnett Award for Excellence in Medicine and The Clark Award for Excellence in Research. Dr. Gatto later moved his practice to New Jersey and became a partner at Tri-County Orthopedics in Morristown, NJ, where he served as the Director of the Tri-County Spine Center. During his final year of training, he was the chief resident and served as an attending surgeon for orthopedic trauma while also working as a clinical instructor. Following his fellowship, Dr. Gatto became an attending surgeon and clinical assistant professor at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, NY, where he served as the chief of spine for the orthopedic surgery department.
He has extensive training in all facets of spine surgery, with a special focus on spine trauma, degenerative spinal disorders, work-related spinal conditions, and the development of minimally invasive techniques. His treatment approach is notably conservative, utilizing all diagnostic options and prioritizing nonoperative methods before considering surgery. In 2015, New Jersey Monthly Magazine recognized Dr. Gatto as one of New Jersey's Top Docs. Since 2006, the Consumers Research Council of America has annually named him one of America’s Top Physicians in spine surgery. Dr. Gatto is also a co-founder, past president, and current board member of Kids’ Chance of New Jersey, Inc., a charitable organization that provides scholarships for vocational and college education to children of catastrophically or fatally injured New Jersey workers.
