Dr. Handal is the Founder, Chairman, and Medical Director of Dothan Behavioral Medicine Clinic (DBMC) and Harmonex Neuroscience Research (HRX). He earned his medical degree from Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in Bolivia after attending medical school at Reprecht Karl University in Heidelberg, Germany. He completed his internship and residency in General Psychiatry at the State University of New York in Syracuse, followed by a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Miami. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, Dr. Handal is also a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a Board-Certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist, he has focused his career on integrating technology into patient care, developing a clinical model that combines modern practices with technological advancements. DBMC, a large mental health clinic serving around 160 patients daily, is a testament to his vision, with many patients traveling over an hour for care.
Dr. Handal has served as the primary investigator in over 70 clinical trials. In the late 1980s, he pioneered one of the first telemedicine referral services, which was featured in Business Week. He developed CliniCom®, an online psychiatric assessment tool used by over 25,000 patients, and testified before the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in 2009 about its innovative impact on veteran care. Throughout his career, Dr. Handal has received numerous accolades, including the 2009 Heroes in the Fight Award from Mental Health America, the 2008 Excellence in Public Mental Health Award from NAMI, and recognition as one of America’s Top Psychiatrists in 2007 and 2008. His clinic, Dothan Behavioral Medicine Clinic, was honored with the 2008 Best of Dothan Award in the Physicians category by the U.S. Local Business Association. Additionally, Dr. Handal received the 2008 Patient’s Choice Award, the 2007 Mental Health Professional of the Year Award for Alabama, and the Clinical Scholar Award from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1996. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
