Male hair loss is a very common condition that can affect as many as 50% of males. Here are 5 of the most common causes of male hair loss.

1.  The first and most common cause of male hair loss is genetics. Usually, if you have males in your family that have hair loss then you have a higher risk of developing hair loss. Genetic based hair loss leads to male pattern baldness which is also known as androgenetic (androgenic) alopecia. This gives rise to the classic receding hairline and thinning of the top of the scalp.

2. The second cause of hair loss in men is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune is a condition where your body's immune system attacks its own cells. In the case of autoimmune hair loss, the immune system attacks the hair cells and causes them to fall. This can lead to various forms of alopecia that can present as patches or big swaths of hair loss.

3.  The third cause of hair loss can be due to nutritional or vitamin deficiencies. Vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin D and Zinc are essential for hair growth and a deficiency in any of them can lead to hair loss. This type of hair loss typically presents in thinning of the hair throughout the scalp.

4. A fourth cause of male hair loss can be due to trauma. Trauma can be either physical such as pulling of the hair such as in tight ponytails or traumatic scars. These areas of hair loss are located along the regions of the trauma the pattern varies from patient to patient.

5.  Finally, hormonal imbalances can lead to hair loss. For example, too much of the male hormone testosterone can lead to significant hair loss. Too much or too little thyroid hormone can lead to thinning of the hair.

Most if not all of these causes can be treated, controlled, or reversed and in cases where this is not possible, hair transplantation is usually able to restore hair to the areas where there was none.
