That is a good question with a simple answer. Oral surgeons are dentists. They are general dentists who have gone on after dental school for additional training, usually 3-4 years, to specialize in oral surgery. All general dentists (what you are referring to as “dentists”) are trained and qualified to remove wisdom teeth. Some general dentists chose to not perform these procedures and they refer these patients to an oral surgeon. The general dentist will make that decision based on their personal training, experiences, comfort levels, position of wisdom teeth, and what is in the patients’ best interest. Many wisdom teeth cases, but not all, require the patient to be sedated (asleep) and the vast majority of general dentists do not perform sedation in their offices. These cases are best handled by an oral surgeon.

I hope I have answered your question. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to me.

Having sensitive teeth is extremely common and there are several causes for this. In order to determine how to treat it, a dentist must try to identify the cause (gum recession is very common cause). Yes, toothpaste for sensitive teeth works - for most people. For those patients who find little or no relief, a combination of treatments may be needed. Combined treatments may include a bite guard (bite splint, occlusal splint, etc), application of desensitzing medication done in a dental office (this is not an over the counter treatment), replacement of metal fillings or other dental work, and/or using specialized toothpastes.
My answer is you need a dentist who can identify the cause of your sensitivity and then prescribe the appropriate treatments for you. Go have this evaluated closely.

First, you need to see dentist as soon as possible. The longer you go without having this evaluated, the greater the chances you will have complications. Yes, I’m concerned that the tooth is loose. But what is potentially a bigger issue is if the bone holding the tooth fractured or if the tooth itself fractured. A dentist will be able to determine this with radiographs (x-rays) and an exam.

There is not anything you can do to prevent further damage. Keep in mind that just because the tooth is loose, does not mean it is going to fall out. There are many procedures that we can do to prevent that from happening.

I highly recommend you have the tooth looked at as soon as you can.
