Dr. Jennifer Lai is passionate about dentistry. She moved to Toronto at age 16 to pursue her dream of becoming a dentist. Of course this dream does not come from nowhere. Dr. Jennifer grew up in a dental office alongside with her mother and grandfather who were both dentists. You can say dentistry is not only a passion for her, but it is in her blood.
Dr. Jennifer Lai received early acceptance into the prestigious University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 2004 as a result of her high achievement in the biochemistry undergraduate program in U of T St George Campus. After receiving her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2008, Dr. Jennifer has continued to further her education by taking numerous post graduate continuing education courses. She is a certified Invisalign provider, as well as be able to provide the traditional wire and brackets orthodontic treatment (Braces) when necessary. Dr. Jennifer has also been trained by some of the best post graduate dental educators in the world, including Misch Implant Institute and the Kois Centre. Dr. Jennifer has been practicing Dentistry since graduating in 2008 and treated thousands of happy patients in Toronto!
Dr. Jennifer believes that every patient is unique and different in their own ways. Therefore, we should provide comprehensive individualized dental care according to each patient’s unique needs. Open communication is another vital component for optimum outcomes and ultimate treatment success. Without understanding each patient’s wants and ultimate goals, we cannot deliver the satisfaction we try to achieve. Dr. Jennifer prides herself on being a great communicator and she strives to achieve the best quality care by listening carefully to her patients. At the same time Dr. Jennifer will personally educate each patient in the specific treatment and the overall value and importance of dental health as an integral component of our overall health. Dr. Jennifer cares not only about dentistry, but more importantly she cares about how to ensure her patients are healthy, happy, comfortable, and being well taking care off.
Dr. Jennifer is also an active member of the Ontario Dental Association (ODA), American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), International Congress of Oral Implantologistsf (ICOI), and International Association of Orthodontics (IAO).
Dr. Jennifer has lived in the core of downtown Toronto neighborhood since 1999. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband Ryan and their two wonderful boys Braedon and Blake.

Generally speaking, airflosser (Sonicare) and most water irrigation system can replace about 80-90% effectiveness as the good old flossing, providing you are flossing correctly with your techniques. Since flossing is quite technique sensitive, and not everyone is flossing the right way, airflosser is a great way to help you improve your daily oral care if using it consistently....just like flossing. However, I still recommend my clients to try flossing once a while even you are using an airflosser daily.

Therefore, I cannot fully answer your question. I highly recommend you to ask your dentist for an assessment to give you a better advice. Also braces is not the only option for correcting mal-alignment anymore. Discuss with your dentist if clear aligners, removable appliances or braces will be the most suitable option for you. I understand it can be quite frustrating for you when you are trying to do everything you can, but still getting unsatisfactory results. The amount of plaque accumulation can depends on various factors. Including the mucous consistency of your saliva, the pH balance in your mouth, your personal habit (smoker or not?), and of course, diet and oral hygiene habits. So try to make sure you keep yourself always hydrated, and consider always rinse out your mouth after a meal or snack. Maybe consider getting an air-flosser or water irrigation system to help with your flossing routine, especially if you have any sort of orthodontic fixed retainers in the back of your teeth. Hello, sorry to hear about your friend as a dry socket can be very painful and uncomfortable. A dry socket is a break down of the blood clot during the healing process. When the blood clot is dissolved or dislodged prematurely, the exposed bone and nerve ending can be irritated by the surrounding environment. It is a self resolvable process, however, it can be quit painful in the meantime. Usually about 10-14 days. If it gets really bad, please go to your dentist for medical dressing to place in the socket till the area is healed. Also OTC Advil or Tylenol as needed for the discomfort. Hope this helps. However, without a more detailed examination, it is hard for me to judge what will be the cause of your sensitivity. Is there a cavity, or just recession and generalized sensitivity. Is there any abrasion/abfrection involved. As the appropriate treatment and recommended will be different depending on your clinical condition. It will be quite concerning if you wash your hands and your hands start to bleed right? So please go visit your dentist at your nearest convenience. Bleeding gum is usually an indication of inflammation. Do not stop flossing because of the gum bleeds, it usually gets better once the tartar or the source of the issues are taking care of. But please go see your dentist as most inflammation of the gum is treatable. However, if left untreated, your surrounding bony structure can also be affect and at that point (periodontitis), it will be an irreversible process. Good luck.
