- medication called zofran or ondansetron that many surgeons prescribe
- Benadryl if you don’t mind the sleepiness… caution when mixing with pain medicines that make you sleepy.

I know this is an annoying answer but it really depends on what they’re doing to your shoulder. For example, I have only seen shoulder replacements be done under general anesthesia. Because of the position, you have to be in and the draping of the shoulder and several other factors, general anesthesia is best. Some smaller surgeries might be able to be done with just some sedation. You also do a nerve block and numb the shoulder and you feel little to no pain during and for several hours after surgery.

Hi. I don’t think the anesthesia itself would cause insomnia. However in the days and weeks following a surgery, your body is going through a lot of recovery and changes. Some factors that might influence sleep would be: Pain, pain medications and other medications, stress and anxiety, maybe you’re in a hospital and getting interrupted for vital signs or treatment, noise, out of your own bed, etc. So trying to manage all these factors might be challenging, but do your best and it will resolve as your body heals.

Hi!!!
The nausea shouldn’t last beyond the day of surgery as the anesthesia drugs will wear off by next day. After that, nausea may continue from factors such as the type of surgery like if you had belly surgery or if you continue to take narcotic pain medicine. Some ways you can avoid the nausea on the day of surgery is that evening make sure to drink plenty of fluids, take pain medicine with food, and start eating slowly. I know we all want a hamburger after being forced to not eat for so long ;) but start with light foods (broth, toast) and see how you handle it and advance diet from there. If you need, your doctor can and probably will prescribe you antibiotics nausea medicine called zofran. I also find Benadryl to work for nausea, but it takes about 30 min to work and might make you sleepy, but it’s a great alternative if other things aren’t working.
Have a great surgery!!! Hope this helps.

Hi!!! Anxiety does not affect anesthesia. In fact, in my experience, 90% of people are anxious before surgery. It’s totally normal, so you’re not alone. And it’s our job as Anesthesiologists to make you feel safe and calm and comfortable. If you’re super anxious while going to sleep, it might take a little more medicine to get you to fall asleep, but that’s not a problem at all. Also I find sometimes, especially women, can have a little crying session after they wake up. I equate it to when a friend has a couple cocktails and end up sobbing to you… completely ok and kind of endearing. So you’ll be absolutely fine :)

Tonsillectomies are done under general anesthesia with a breathing tube. Because of the location of where they will be operating, it’s safest to be able to control your breathing and also prevent any bit of blood from entering your lungs. Not to worry, the tube goes in after you fall asleep and comes out before you wake up so you shouldn’t even know it was there .
