If your friend's hearing loss has occurred very recently, she should see an Ear, Nose and Throat physician as soon as possible. Rapid treatment with steroids can sometimes restore function from a sudden hearing loss. A full hearing evaluation is needed. If no improvement is gained from steroid treatment, hearing aids or a cochlear implant are recommended.

Most likely there is fluid in the middle ear space as a result of your recent illness and that will clear on its own within a couple of weeks. However, there is also the chance that this is a sudden sensorineural hearing loss that requires immediate attention. I would strongly recommend you see an audiologist or ENT physician ASAP to determine the nature of the hearing loss. If this is a sensorineural loss there are treatments that can help recover the hearing, but they need to be started very quickly. When you call for an appointment inform the scheduler that you have experienced a sudden drop in hearing. He/she should schedule you to see the professional within 24 hours.

Tinnitus following an exposure to very loud sound is a sign of acoustic injury. If the buzzing is gone, your ears have recovered from the injury this time. However, be aware that repeated insults may result in a permanent hearing loss in your future. I strongly recommend that you reduce the volume on your ear buds and use hearing protection anytime you will exposed to loud noise, such as from a lawn mower, in the future. You want to protect your hearing for the long run.

Hereditary factors can make you more susceptible to hearing loss, but having members of your family that have developed hearing loss in their later years does not necessarily mean you will as well. I would recommend seeing an Audiologist for a comprehensive hearing evaluation. If your hearing is normal now, you will have a baseline from which to monitor changes in the future. Your mother should also have a comprehensive hearing evaluation. If a hearing loss is found, she may benefit from hearing aids. While hearing aids cannot prevent a progressive hearing loss, they can mitigate the other negative health effects of hearing loss, such as increased risk of cognitive decline and depression. I would also recommend that you protect your hearing by limiting your exposure to loud noises and wearing hearing protection any time you must be exposed to loud noises.

It would absolutely NOT be recommended that you start wearing ear plugs, nor that you avoid louder sounds in general. You should wear ear plugs if you are going to be exposed to very loud sounds like lawn mowers, motor sports or shooting sports, to protect your hearing. Complete avoidance of normal louder sounds could actually make the situation worse. You have taken the right steps to have your hearing tested and the health of your ears checked. You could try some cognitive behavioral therapy to give you tools to help you deal with the sensation when it crops up.
