Psychologist
Just as children should see a pediatrician rather than a GP, children struggling in school should see a psychologist with ample experience in schools. As a school psychologist, I often received private evaluations and treatment recommendations that were unhelpful to school staff, misled families, and wasted valuable time and resources. This was not due to a lack of skill, but a lack of knowing how to strategically apply those skills in a school and classroom setting. Schools and classrooms today have many moving parts, to which any intervention must fit like a glove to be successful.
In addition to traditional treatments, I also offer a program that children truly get excited about called the Academic Success Program (ASP). The ASP is a highly specialized, evidence-based, therapeutic, mindful martial arts treatment. Since 2003, the ASP has been conducted as an after-school program at various Gwinnett County schools, with students from 67 local schools having participated to date. Many families prefer this innovative approach as an alternative or supplement to traditional therapy. Decades of closely supervised research have found this program particularly effective for improving executive functions such as attention, focus, working memory, self-control, and behavioral regulation. Most importantly, however, parents and teachers and principals report greatly improved classroom performance. Moreover, the ASP is also highly effective in developing leadership skills, for which many children presenting no concerns have historically been enrolled.
