I wanted to share my thoughts on social anxiety disorder, a psychological condition that involves a fear of being observed or judged by others. Individuals coping with this disorder often resort to avoidance strategies to navigate social situations, preferring the comfort of their own personal space (Burger, 2017).
Those affected by social anxiety frequently attempt to address their fears independently, challenging themselves to confront their subconscious anxieties in social settings. This can lead to physical symptoms such as nausea, difficulty speaking, sweating, and trembling (Burger, 2017). For instance, someone with social anxiety may genuinely desire social interaction, yet the overwhelming fear of rejection or judgment leads them to avoid such situations. In this scenario, providing reassurance and encouraging the individual to engage with others and explore new experiences can be beneficial.
It's important to recognize that individuals with social anxiety may have encountered psychological trauma or negative experiences that have contributed to their condition. This distinguishes them from individuals with an introverted personality or tendencies. While both groups may experience anxiety, the willingness to engage with others and participate in social activities varies significantly between the two.
Encouraging those with social anxiety to seek professional help can be challenging, as the psychological factors and traumas associated with the disorder can make this step feel daunting. As future Mental Health Care Professionals, we must work towards normalizing the treatment of mental health and fostering an understanding of mental health disorders as a standard part of our society. Viewing seeking help for mental health issues as no different from seeking medical attention for a physical ailment is crucial.
