Lastly, have him evaluated by a private practice speech pathologist. It's concerning that your child's pediatrician hasn't recommended further assessment. By age 3, if your child isn't speaking at all, it's an indication that there may be something more serious occurring along with a significant developmental delay. Your child should have their first word between 8-12 months of age. By 3, he should be speaking in small sentences.

With that said, sometimes it truly is a language delay. With your child being 2, you can contact the early intervention program in your area and have your child evaluated. You can also contact a private practice speech-language pathologist in your area to have an evaluation completed. Typically health insurance will cover the evaluation.

With your child being six, being non-verbal, your child likely will need additional help to speak even in small phrases or use an AAC (alternative augmentative communication system) such as PECs (no tech) or a computer system designed for communication purposes (tech device). This person would be a speech-language pathologist. There is some confusion regarding ABA therapy if your child is receiving this. Their primary purpose is not communication, and I would not rely on this type of therapy to address your child's communication needs.

Developmental stuttering can resolve on its own and is believed to be more of the child's mind functioning faster than they are able to articulate words. However, this type of stuttering doesn't demonstrate typical behaviors such as blocks, prolongations, repetitions and physical concomitants. Also, developmental stuttering usually doesn't last very long and occurs between ages of 2-4. If stuttering hasn't resolved by the age of 5-6, chances are it is not developmental stuttering. Other factors that might play into your child stuttering could be a genetic predisposition, meaning someone in your family stutters.

All in all, I would recommend seeing a Speech Pathologist to determine if there is a stuttering disorder or not.
