Becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon has been one of the most fulfilling journeys of my life, and I feel grateful every day to use my skills to make a difference for my patients. If you've ever wondered what it takes to pursue a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery or what goes on behind the scenes to provide the highest quality care, I’d love to share my story with you. At Elite Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Oklahoma, my journey is an integral part of the expertise and compassionate care I bring to each patient I treat.

The Foundation – From Exercise Science to Dentistry

My journey began with a strong academic foundation. I earned my Bachelor’s in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It was during this time that I developed a deep appreciation for the mechanics of the human body. Studying exercise science gave me insights into how the body moves, heals, and functions, sparking my desire to pursue a career that combined medical science with hands-on treatment.

After completing my undergraduate studies, I pursued my Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree at Roseman University of Health Sciences. Dental school was a transformative experience that pushed me to new limits academically and clinically. It was here that I found my passion for surgery and realized the profound impact oral health has on overall health and quality of life. I graduated from Roseman in 2017, prepared for the next steps toward becoming a surgeon.

A Dual-Degree Path: Residency and Medical School

To provide the highest level of care in oral and maxillofacial surgery, I knew that earning a medical degree in addition to my dental degree would be invaluable. This led me to the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, where I obtained my Doctor of Medicine (MD). Medical school was demanding, yet incredibly rewarding, and it provided a deep dive into the complexities of human health.

During this time, I completed extensive medical training, including USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3. Each of these steps was a rigorous examination of my medical knowledge and skills, allowing me to build a strong foundation that would prove crucial in my surgical training. Achieving my MD provided a new dimension to my education, equipping me with a comprehensive understanding of not only oral health but the entire human body.

Six-Year Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

After completing dental school, I embarked on a challenging but incredibly rewarding six-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University at Buffalo. This residency program was one of the most intensive training experiences of my career, immersing me in all facets of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

General Surgery Internship

A year of residency training included a general surgery internship, where I gained hands-on experience across multiple disciplines. During this year, I rotated through specialties such as vascular surgery, emergency medicine, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and trauma surgery. This broad-based training taught me the skills needed to manage complex surgical cases and the intricacies of operating in a fast-paced hospital environment. Whether I was assisting in a trauma case or managing a vascular complication, these experiences prepared me to handle even the most challenging cases in oral surgery.

Comprehensive Training in Anesthesiology

One of the unique aspects of my training was my six-month rotation in anesthesiology at a Level 1 trauma hospital and a children’s hospital. This wasn’t just learning how to administer sedation—it was about mastering the art of patient safety and comfort. Anesthesiology training taught me how to tailor anesthesia plans to each patient’s unique needs, from young children to high-risk adults. Today, this experience allows me to provide safe, comfortable sedation options for my patients at Elite Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Oklahoma.

Specialized Training in Orthognathic and Facial Surgery

As I progressed through residency, I had the opportunity to specialize in complex areas like orthognathic (jaw) surgery, head and neck surgery, facial trauma repair, and head and neck infection management. Each of these subspecialties required precision, patience, and a comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy.

  • Orthognathic Surgery: Performing corrective jaw surgery allows me to help patients who suffer from misaligned bites, facial asymmetry, and breathing difficulties. It’s one of the most rewarding surgeries I perform because of its potential to improve both appearance and function.
  • Head and Neck Surgery: This aspect of my training involved managing benign and malignant conditions in the head and neck region. Learning the intricacies of head and neck surgery prepared me to address complex cases, providing patients with peace of mind and top-tier care.
  • Facial Trauma Repair: My time spent repairing facial trauma cases gave me a profound understanding of how to restore both function and appearance. Facial trauma patients often face significant challenges, and helping them regain their confidence is one of the most fulfilling parts of my work.
  • Complex Bone Grafting and Dental Implant Surgery: Dr. Egan gained extensive experience performing dental implant surgeries and uses cutting-edge technology, including 3D imaging and computer-guided implant placement. His meticulous approach ensures precise, predictable results every time.

A Commitment to Lifelong Learning and Patient Care

Throughout my residency, I not only trained in surgery but also took on teaching roles. As Chief Resident, I organized and led weekly lectures, morbidity and mortality conferences, and interdepartmental case discussions. Teaching these sessions honed my understanding and kept me at the forefront of evolving surgical techniques and best practices. Sharing my knowledge with other residents reinforced my commitment to learning and to patient-centered care.
