The most potent opioid in oral form is dilaudid, however, that is typically not necessary. Most patients do fine with vicodin (hydrocodone) or percocet (oxycodone). If the surgery doesn't involve a fusion, then alternating tylenol with NSAIDs as soon as you can get away from the opioids is best.

Orthopedic doctors are surgeons, that is what our training is and the service we provide. Most back pain can be managed by your family doctor. If it becomes radiating pain that does not improve, he can then order imaging and refer to an orthopedic surgeon. Just keep in mind we are not pain management or therapy we are surgery

As long as the fracture does not involve compression of the spinal cord or some type of instability most of them are really no different than a broken foot, painful, but will heal. But what really matters is which part is fractured as some patterns are very serious which should be discussed with whomever is treating you.
