Psoriasis is a skin condition triggered by a problem with the immune system. It is characterized by red patches on the skin, as a result of the accumulation of dead skin cells. Over 5% of individuals with UC also suffer from psoriasis. Treatment options for this condition generally include the use of retinoids or topical corticosteroids. Although researchers speculate a relationship between the genes that cause IBD and those that cause psoriasis, further research is necessary before deriving to any conclusions.
