10 Things Doctors Want You to Know About Crohn's Disease

Experience both flare-ups

You might experience both flare-ups and moments of remission.

During a flare-up (or gastrointestinal inflammation), your symptoms might be at their worst, but rest assured that most people with Crohn’s disease or other irritable bowel disease (IBD) will go through cycles of both flare-ups and remission. Depending on the person, remission might be anywhere between lighter symptoms to no symptoms at all.

Flare-ups include the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain (which typically worsens after meals)
  • Anemia
  • Blood in stool
  • Diarrhea
  • Eye inflammation
  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Skin lesions
  • Weight loss
