23andMe Has Teamed Up with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to Help Research for Parkinson's

Parkinson's: Is it hereditary?

Parkinson’s disease was primarily believed to have no genetic basis before. However, during the Human Genome Project, they traced Parkinson’s to a specific gene that was prevalent in patients in North America and Europe. This was the LRRK2 gene. After its discovery, the gene is now used as a genetic marker for the risk of Parkinson’s disease. This marker is also seen to cause a greater risk to other ethnicities. There currently is no explanation for the disease, but research is still ongoing about this discovery.
