Diabetes Patients May Be at a Higher Risk for Strokes
Link between cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes
Another study, conducted by Dr. Anoop Dinesh Shah, and published in the United States National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, strived to link together a plethora of cardiovascular diseases not yet identified as having direct relationships with type 2 diabetes. The method by which the research team went about their study included selection of patients who were or had turned 30 years or older between the dates of January 1, 1998, to March 25, 2010, whom had been free of cardiovascular disease at the beginning of the study. The primary focus, of which served as the endpoint for the study, included the first record of 12 cardiovascular signs in any of the data obtained. Of the patients whom had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the study, 17.9 percent had what was deemed a “first cardiovascular presentation”, with the most common among the various types being peripheral arterial disease. The study determined that patients with type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop heart-related conditions, namely the various types of cardiovascular disease, as well as other related clinical complications.
