Do People with Autism Also Have Mental Health Issues?
What were the results?
The studies found that those with autism spectrum disorder were five times more likely to have a mental illness diagnosis than those who developed neurotypically, and double as likely as those with a different developmental disability.
52 percent of the participants with autism spectrum disorder had a psychiatric diagnosis, compared to 39 percent of those with a different developmental disability, and 20 percent of neurotypical young adults. They were also shown to be more likely to visit an emergency department for such reasons at 8 percent, compared to those with a developmental disability at 7 percent, and those without at 2 percent.
