Get Up! How a Sedentary Life Can Bring on an Early Death

Background on the study

Diaz and the rest of his team at Columbia, New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, along with other medical research institutions as well, wanted to further understand how prolonged sitting can lead to an earlier death, so they spoke to the researchers behind the Reasons for Geographic and Races Difference in Stroke project (REGARDS). This project was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Diaz explains how this impacted their own work, "The REGARDS study was originally designed to examine why blacks (and particularly blacks in the Southern US) have a greater risk for stroke than whites."

In his own study, around 8,000 adults of different races were surveyed, all over the age of 45, and agreed to participate in the REGARDS project.
