Robin Williams Misdiagnosed with Parkinson's Disease

Understanding Lewy body dementia

Although the reason for Robin’s death was suicide, the actor-comedian was initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). All the symptoms found and observed were those of Parkinson’s, but they’re also traceable to Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). After an autopsy was conducted and results were analyzed, it became clear that the cause was LBD.

Lewy Body Dementia is the second most common type of progressive dementia. 1.4 million Americans and millions of others around the world are affected by the condition. It is especially prevalent among the elderly beyond 60 years of age. The real number of LBD cases could be twice or thrice as much than the reported cases because of misdiagnosis.
