The Best and Worst States for Diabetes
Weight and diabetes
Age, pregnancy, race, certain medications, race, family history and high cholesterol contribute to diabetes. The single most predictor of type 2 diabetes is obesity. More than 90 percent of those living with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Weight adds pressure on the body’s ability or inability to use insulin to control glucose levels. If a patient is overweight, then they are at risk of developing diabetes. During the 1990s diabetes cases increased by almost a third and most of these cases included those who are obese.
Obesity is directly linked to diabetes, and rising obesity rates threaten the finances of everyone. Birmingham-Hoover Alabama reports an obesity rate of 34 percent of its population. Huntington-Ashland West Virginia area reported 35 percent obesity rate, and the health costs in these cities are rising.
