Dying to Know...What Happens to the Body Right Before You Die
Light at the end of the tunnel
Okay, so the whole losing ourselves thing isn't very uplifting. But is there something positive, like a light at the end of the tunnel? Shaw says yes.
He explains, "We know from experience tunnel vision emerges abruptly when you suddenly lose blood supply to the brain. The first thing you notice in fainting is the narrowing of vision, followed by blackness. You could argue that's the way in which death would progress as well because the same mechanisms are in place and it's an interruption of blood flow to the brain."
So, does this mean that there is an afterlife? Or, that a god is at the end of the tunnel? Shaw says there is no scientific proof of that, but he believes it's best to let people leave that up to their own interpretations.
