Fats

Another commonly misunderstood aspect of dieting is fat consumption. Fats traditionally have a very negative connotation as they can lead to weight gain. However, fats are an incredibly important part of any diet because they keep your heart healthy, lower your cholesterol, and provide energy for your body to function. The best kind of fats are called unsaturated fats, which are found in foods like avocados, nuts, and fish oils. The fats you typically want to avoid are called trans fats, as these types of fats provide no health benefits and can lead to illnesses such as heart disease or a stroke. Trans fats are typically found in processed foods like snack cakes, sausages, or potato chips. Fried and grilled foods typically have a lot of trans fats as well. Snacking on nuts like cashews, almonds, or brazil nuts are a great way to get plenty of unsaturated fats into your diet. Make sure to take it easy on the fried and processed foods as well.
