Fibromyalgia Through the Centuries: How Fibromyalgia Has Evolved

1986-1989

  • 1986-1987: Simon Carette and Don Goldenberg both published reports on the treatment of symptoms related to fibromyalgia using tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline in 1986. The reports were based on controlled random trials. Fibromyalgia was finally recognized by the American Medical Association as a true disease in 1987.
  • 1989: In 1989, evidence provided by Dr. Yunus showed that fibromyalgia patients had normal results of their muscle biopsies. Due to this, research started to focus on the central nervous system rather than the muscular system.
