Dr. Keshavjee and his team came out victorious, towing behind Melissa’s two lungs, which had become hard and tough due to the infectious pus and mucus buildup. After both lungs were removed, Melissa was put back on the Extracorporeal Lung Support device, along with a Novalung, a device used to oxygenate blood. Both devices served as supplementary support to replace respiratory function.
