Why Do Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms Improve in the Winter?

Link between corticosteroid therapy and melatonin

Another recent study examined the link between corticosteroid therapy and melatonin in MS. In this study, methylprednisolone (MP) corticosteroid treatment was used in an acute experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) rodent model and via intravenous injection in MS patients. Melatonin serum levels were assessed and the clinical results showed significant improvement in MP treatment versus PBS-treated EAE rodent model. Moreover, melatonin serum levels showed a significant reduction in the MP group as well as a significant drop in melatonin serum levels in MS patients receiving MP treatment.
