Remedies for Ulcerative Colitis Constipation
Talk to your doctor about stool-bulking agents
There are certain medicines available that can increase the volume of stools, which makes them easier to pass. They are a type of laxative called bulk-forming laxatives, and they increase the volume of stools with water weight and fiber. Though there are many different types of laxatives, bulk-forming laxatives work by retaining water in the bowels, without affecting the muscles or lubricating the stools like some other laxatives.
Bulk-forming laxatives are most often used in cases of chronic constipation, and will need to be taken with a doctor’s supervision when used in conjunction with other prescriptions for ulcerative colitis. The symptoms of constipation will gradually go away with the use of bulk-forming laxatives, as opposed to providing immediate relief. Some people prefer this, because it helps the body adjust and improve more naturally than with other laxatives.
There should be no side effects when taking these laxatives. Any stomach pain, vomiting, or nausea that arises after taking bulk-forming laxatives should be reported immediately. In order to ensure that the laxatives work properly, they should be taken with 8 ounces of either water or juice.
