One Transgender Man’s Story of Getting Breast Cancer

Sexton’s individual case highlights a few of the challenges that transgender individuals face in healthcare – reluctance to seek care due to fear of discrimination and rejections of insurance coverage. According to research findings, most transgender individuals reported that they did not seek medical care when necessary due to fear of being mistreated. Others reported that they had at least one negative experience when seeking medical care as a transgender, either by being verbally harassed or being refused treatment. Knowing he had to take the initiative to seek medical care, Sexton sought out care at the UW Health facility. He praised them for their care by stating “They treated me with respect. They welcomed me.”
