Real Stories of Teen Suicide that Will Make You Think

Hannah Smith was attacked on Ask.fm when all she wanted was advice for her eczema.

Ask.fm is a social media app, popular among kids and teens, where users can ask and answer questions anonymously online. In 2013, 14-year-old  Hannah Smith went on the site to ask for advice on dealing with her eczema. Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a relatively common skin condition that causes itching, redness, and irritation.

Online trolls responded to Hannah’s post with vicious messages, including: “every1 will be happy if u died”; “drink bleach”; and “go die”. Hannah’s sister, Jo, says that these Internet trolls couldn’t care less about Hannah’s suicide. In fact, Jo says that, after Hannah died, these trolls started harassing her and other members of her family, as well.
