Reality Show About Raising Kids with Autism is Surprisingly Complicated

Portraying the parents in Atypical

Kelsey Broughton, a special education teacher at Kerkstra Elementary School, spoke out about the show’s portrayal of one family’s coping approach to autism. She also responded well to how the complexities of autism were presented. “I felt that they did a nice job trying to shed light on the difficulties parents of children who have autism face. They portray the mom and dad having very different relationships with their son, as well as responding to the diagnosis in different ways. I felt that that aspect of the show could be nice for a parent to see who is facing the same struggles, and being hard on themselves for the way they are coping,” said Broughton.
