All About Julia, the First Muppet with Autism

Julia's puppeteer can relate

Stacey Gordon is the puppeteer who plays Julia. She is also the mother of a son with autism. Gordon traveled all the way from Arizona to New York to audition for the part. On an interview with 60 Minutes, she shares how important it is for kids in society to see autism treated with compassion. For Sesame Street, they have accomplished this using Julia in their beloved puppet cast. Gordon hopes that by seeing Julia on the show, kids will have a better understanding of other kids like her son. It’s important that kids see what autism looks like, and that it’s okay to be different.
