Rheumatologist Questions Kidney Cysts

3.5cm Complicated Cyst On Right Kidney

During a recent MRI for an unrelated pain in my right groin, a 3.5cm cyst was discovered on my right kidney. It was called a “complicated” cyst. I have had a pain in that area that I attributed to back pain as in a strained muscle. It lasted for about 2 weeks with pain gradually increasing then decreasing until it went away. Now that I know it’s there it seems I can feel it when I sit down or twist a certain way. I was told to go back for another MRI in six months.

I’m a 64 year old male in relatively decent health. Can or should the cyst be removed?

Male | 64 years old
Complaint duration: 2-3 weeks
Medications: Atenolol, simvastaten, lisinopril, esomeprazole magnesium

Complex cysts need to be watched but surgery would only be indicated if it became suspicious over time. You are getting the correct approach.
Not unless there are changes on a f/u imaging study suggesting potential malignancy or infection
Hello!

Thanks so much for your question. A rheumatologist would not be the correct specialty to consult on such an issue. Perhaps your pcp, renal doctor, or urologist would be able to adequately assess and assist you.
Thanks so much!
